Many works play with juxpositions near and far, with shifting clarity and mystery.

The artworks that combine the close by with the far away are a celebration of the complexity of relationships seen, felt and painted. The manipulated spaces include deep passages in which the foregrounds either dissolve or serve as anchors. Additionally, the act of painting itself creates a tension between the near-at-hand surface and the evocation of a magical world of space, light and energy.
Two recent works (below) at first appear unfinished. In Hudson Lines the areas of minimal description spin around the dynamic forms of storm-felled trees at rest. I developed circular and angular rhythms amidst the malleable patterns within the trees, clouds and water. And then changed them many times, adding and removing detail to create an image of a tenuous world.

In Carved Surface (14x11"), Roaring Brook Falls has carved out and cleared the rock face in the way that the painted areas have carved out the bare, flat surface of the panel:

The almost bare corner of Across the Way allows no foothold in the plunging space of the calanque near Cassis. The tiny beach goers are dwarfed by the scale of the cliffs and the geological forces that made them:

A plunging space on a smaller scale inspired The Pool Below (24x24"), based on Hulls Falls near Keene NY :

The swirling energy of watery foregrounds dominates several works in the show:
Surface Tension (30x40") Ausable Pool (18x24")

Others include foreground elements that temporarily anchor the spaces:
Resting Place (11x14") Adirondack Fireworks (14x11")

Several paintings focus on the turbulence of the Ausable River, part of my larger project "Follow the Water"
Ausable Abundance (18x24") Ausable Serpentines (40x30")

A set of paintings from Southern France share many of the same themes.
